For many teenagers, getting their driver's license is a huge right of passage. It means that you no longer have to rely on your parents to get everywhere not within walking distance and that can mean a part-time job, a bigger social life, and a chance to get involved in more activities that interest you. But with most large cities now having efficient public transit systems, many people are choosing not to go through the process of getting their driver's license. While it is possible to grow up and get to your job working downtown or with lumber banding machines without driving every day, there are still many reasons to get your license.
One of the reasons that most people nineteen years and older are aware of is that a driver's license is a primary form of identification. If you don't want to carry your passport around all the time than a driver's license can be very useful for everything from getting into a bar to getting a new library card. Many people find that even if they have no intention of driving, having this card is way more convenient than all of the alternatives. Plus, if you're in a province like Ontario, you could choose to just take the written driver's test and stick with a learner's permit, or G1. Then it will be easier to get your G2 if you one day need to drive, maybe for new job or you won a 2012 car sweepstakes.
Speaking of jobs, there are sometimes more available to those who know how to drive. If you're in the market for a new career than many companies see a person with a driver's license as an advantage. You could use a car to get you to and from business meetings independently or could even secure a career working with used septic tank trucks. Sometimes a company car will even be offered to you as a member of the staff. But, of course you can only use it if you have a valid driver's license.
Some people like to have a driver's license for emergency situations. If you're living in a very populated area, than there may come a time when it would be faster for you to take someone to the hospital rather than waiting for an ambulance to arrive. If you own your own construction business than it's certain you would want most of your staff to be able to drive. But, a car can even be useful for much more minor problems. You could have to pick up some documents from the printers or get one of your kids quickly from school to practice.
For many people, a driver's license gives them a sense of freedom. You don't have to rely on anyone else, from people to public transit schedules, to get where you want to go. But, with modern times comes more people working at home for an SEM Toronto firm, for example, and concerning themselves more with the environment. Remember, having a driver's license doesn't mean you need to own a car.
